The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce awarded 25 area high school students with Accelerate Greater Charleston 2 (AGC) Scholarships on Tuesday, May 17. Since its inception four years ago, the scholarship has created the opportunity for 127 students to pursue higher education at Trident Technical College.
The scholarship is awarded to students in Berkeley County, Charleston County and Dorchester 2 School Districts who are graduating from a regional Career Academy with a 2.0 to 2.9 GPA. Each student will be provided a $1000 per semester scholarship (or $2000 per year) to Trident Technical College for up to two years to obtain a degree in one of our region’s high-demand career sectors.
“This scholarship is funded completely through our business community who have invested in the Chamber’s Accelerate Greater Charleston 2 Campaign – the business community is commited to creating a talent pipeline locally,” said Bryan Derreberry, President and CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber along with Trident Tech will be their partners for the next two years, working to ensure their success at Tech and beyond.”
Through the AGC Scholarships, Career Academies and Youth Apprenticeships, the Chamber is preparing our local students with the skills they need to be hired in the region’s highest demand jobs. Utilizing a Talent Demand Study completed in 2014 and updated in 2016, the Chamber has identified and projected what jobs are the fastest growing and what skills they require which serves as the basis for the talent initiatives.
These programs, with the commitment of 119 Accelerate Greater Charleston 2 investors, are creating opportunities and changing the lives of our students, while preparing them for our region’s high demand jobs.
“For me, this scholarship served as a huge motivator,” said Faith Huff, 2014 AGC Scholarship recipient and 2017 graduate of Trident Tech. “It felt like besides my friends and family, I also had a support group in the Chamber of Commerce standing behind me, encouraging me and helping me achieve my goals that could have been otherwise unobtainable.”
